High Level Bridge (The Iron bridge)

The high level bridge (Iron Bridge) opened in 1849 by Queen Victoria the oldest of the group of 7 bridges to cross the Tyne between Newcastle and Gateshead. It was also the first bridge in the world to have two different levels, top one for trains and the lower one for pedestrians. It was strengthened in the 1920's to carry trams on its lower section. Note how much the banks of the river have totally changed.
